Locust Pocus

Observing the thorn structure of a locust tree in the pasture.

Locust tree
(Gleditsia triacanthos)

Two branches near the base of a thorn.

Thorns are spaced about 2in / 5cm along the stem.

And they grow around the stem
forming about 120-degree angle
from one thorn to the next one.

It spreads very easily by seeds or forming suckers at the base when cut. The best way to get rid of them, that we know so far, is by burning them. A nuisance to tractor or any vehicle's tires, and 4-wheeler rider. But (I read that) cattle loves the leaves and seed pods. The thorns can grow to about 4in / 10cm.
