American Beauty

American Beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a native plant in Southeastern United States. It is generally ornamental but its berry can actually be eaten by human and made jellies. It contains astringent agent though, so consuming this in large amount is not advisable.

Deer and birds love to eat the berries, too, and this helps spread the seeds. Other usable parts of this Verbenaceae family member are the roots (used to make herbal tea) and leaves (fresh crushed to keep biting insect from horses and mules). Source: Wikipedia.
